Another nice Revolutionary piece, this one a larger denomination than usual. Look at the typical array of symbols. We have Liberty, or perhaps France herself extending a victor's wreath over the rooster, another symbol of France. The bundled sticks with the axeheads are a recurring symbol as is the liberty cap between them. What the heck is the folding shovel in her left hand? If anyone has a theory let me know...
This piece mentions both calendar systems in use, the Gregorian and the new Revolutionary calendar of which this bill was printed in 'L'An premier de la Republique'. I've yet to purchase a bill identified as a counterfeit but it must have been a terrible problem, judging by the dire warning on both end of this bill.
I read someplace that the British, through French emigres, printed up millions of phony notes and dumped them on the market.
