| At first I believed this to be an earlier piece similar to the other
10 paoli on-site. In fact,as my friend of
Rome Giampaolo tells me (April 2001),
this is "in effect a coupon issued by the roman pawn-broker
agency (Monte di Pietà) which gave the coupon to someone
that pawned something. The bill had a parallel circulation along with
the official currency and at the expiring date of 11 september 1798,
as it's written, the individual who possessed the coupon was entitled
to get back the pawned item or an official 10 Paoli banknote."
- Thanks! That's so much more interesting than just a piece
of paper money... |
