Here
is an example of two assignats that never got cut apart
on the sheet. The interesting thing to me about these two
were the different signatures and, possibly, different
series numbers on the same sheet. You can see the single
seal on both but the watermark (looks like a stylized 'F'
in a circle to me) is less obvious under the signature. Gérard has clearly signed a Série 28569 assignat. Chaigue(rf) on the other hand may have signed a Série 23589 assignat. Even on the original it appears to be a '3' as opposed to a poorly formed '8'. The possibility intrigues me. Notice that the standard threats concerning counterfeiting and denunciation are still part of this note while all mention of the king has disappeared. Since his head was also missing it's perhaps not all that surprising... Last Modified |
