Hapsburg paper is not really very common, judging from the relative lack of it at the various shows. This piece clearly shows what the Hapsburgs were up against with their 'polyglot' empire. On both the front and back the denomination is printed in 5 languages. And can you spell paranoia or distrust? There are 4 seals, easily the most I've ever seen on one piece of money. Held up to the light you can see at least two watermarks. In addition, take a good look at the reverse. It literally mirrors several of the design elements so that when held up to the light the front and back must match perfectly or it would look wrong. Actually, this reminds me of the current day Czech money. While it is beautiful, which I wouldn't accuse this utilitarian note of being, it is also loaded with the same defensive mechanisms. Of course, so is the new American $100 bill... Last Modified |
