Size, 26 mm.
 
This medal appears to commemorate the Swiss Guard that died at Versailles trying to protect Louis XVI and his family from the mob.
I would guess it's made of cast silver and probably dates from shortly after the massacre of August 10, 1792. There was an example of this piece in the Julius collection where it was described as follows:
