| A nice piece I picked up that dates approximately to 1814. Gayrard was active at this time and the bust matches other portraits of Louis XVIII I've seen from that time. The "military" look didn't suit this rather corpulent man and the portrait was only used in 1814-1815. It doesn't show up in either Bramsen or d'Essling that I've been able to find. It's original in the sense that there are no edge marks to indicate that it was struck later than my guess. |
